Determine Your Garage Doors Sizes

If you are in the market for a new garage door, it is easy to feel confused about how to shop for one. In most cases, all you know is that you need a new door; you have no idea how to find one, or what to look for, or even how to make sure you are getting the right size. At this point, many people would simply call a professional garage door company and have them do the work. While this is a reasonable solution, it is also one that costs considerably more than shopping for and purchasing a garage door on your own.

Unless you are an expert handyman, it is likely you will still have to hire someone to install the garage door. However, already having the correct one on hand can cut that cost down as well.

What Are You Using Your Garage For? – One of the first things to consider when looking for a garage door is what you will be using it for. For example, obviously a single car garage is going to require a smaller door than a double or even a triple. Other things to consider are whether or not you are going to use the garage to store an RV or a boat in, or any other type of vehicle that requires higher clearance.

Please note that this only applies to a garage in the process of being built or a custom sized on you are replacing. The majority of garage doors on pre-built homes are a standard size.

Standard Sized Doors – If you have or are building a garage with standard sized doors, you can purchase them nearly anywhere. Many people find it easiest to purchase garage doors at Home Depot or another store like it. The standard size for a residential single-car garage door is between 7-10 feet wide and 7 feet tall. To determine the exact size, simply measure the height and the width of the existing opening. Most standard garage doors are 7 feet tall, which allows headroom for a garage door opener and clearance for the majority of vehicles.

Double or Custom-Sized Doors – Although the method of measuring is the same, double (or two car) garage doors are not simply a single garage door that is double the size. Instead, the most common sizes for two-car or double garage doors is between 12-18 feet wide and either 7 or 8 feet tall. It is important that you know how tall your garage is before purchasing a garage door, because that additional foot in height can mean the difference of a vehicle fitting or not!

If your garage door is more of a customized size, or if you are installing one larger door to fit an RV or boat and two (or more) smaller garage doors, the standard of measuring remains the same. However, in these cases you need to double and perhaps triple check your measurements, making sure to figure in room for hardware and openers. If you have any questions about measuring your garage doors, you can easily find information online or at your local home and building store.
